Third meeting

The third project meeting with all partners took place in Kdyně, Czech Republic from 12th till 17th of May 2013.

On the occasion of the third project meeting all comenius partners made their way to Kdyne in Czech Republic. In total 16 teachers and 35 students have been guests at Masarykova zakladni skola Kdyne, making it the biggest meeting in this project so far.

After a warm welcome on the schoolyard, every student was picked up by his /her host-family and the teachers could enjoy a delicious barbecue, prepared by the staff.

The first official day started with a welcome meeting in the town hall. The mayor himself, Jan Löffelmann, welcomed the teachers from all over Europe in his town. Even the local TV-station reported about this event. After exchanging presents from each partner-country the mayor showed his guests round in the history museum and was able to tell lots of interesting details of cultural relevance. Afterwards the teachers visited the first school of Kdyne, where they could enjoy some songs by the choir and see an English-lesson. Meanwhile the guest-students could get a taste of the lessons together with their hosts.

Culture and history then also have been the main topics of the first Comenius workshop in school. After enjoying lunch in the school-canteen each partner presented a video, dealing with the live and circumstances in the specific regions 100 years ago. These films then were followed by the presentation of typical traditional recipes, which will be collected and published in a calendar.

In the evening the teachers and the school staff met for bowling. The Czech teachers offered lots of delicious homemade food but you could instantly burn the calories on the bowling alley.

On the following day teachers as well as students went on a day-trip to the city of Pilsen. While the students spent a lovely time in the zoo and dinosaur-park, the teachers took part in a guided tour in the brewery of “Pilsener Ur-Quell”, the birth-place of all Pils-Type beers. Impressed by the modern bottling plant and the highly technological processes, the Comenius-team also got the chance to have a look at the traditional way of brewing. In the spacious basement vault, originally used for storing because of its cool temperatures, everyone was offered a glass of traditionally brewed and in a wooden cask matured beer. The beer had the perfect temperature, namely 8°C, and had a delicious taste. But as in the basement there was the same temperature, nobody asked for a second glass J

In the afternoon teachers and students went to the Pilsen museum of puppets and marionettes, were you have a look at different puppet characters and marvel the art of a puppeteer. Afterwards everyone had to protect his head with a helmet because the group went downwards. On a guided tour all through the historic basement vault, extending beneath the whole city, ti was easy to imagine how live in medieval times in Pilsen must have been. Seeing daylight again, there was enough time to stroll and to buy some souvenirs in the wonderful city centre.

The morning of the following day was used for intensive Comenius work. Tasks have been shared and the next meeting in Luxemburg has been arranged. After that everyone went to the gymnasium. After being spectators of a floorball-match of local students, the teachers had to prove their sporty talent. In a fast and pugnacious match between Czech teachers and the cross-European Comenius team, nobody wanted to lose. Cheered by all the students the Comenius Teacher team had to surrender and face the 2:3 score.

In the afternoon the teachers started a trip to the Chodsko-region. The first stop was the pictorial Domazlice. Not only the teachers but also several students together with their host-families came to the small town for strolling and shopping. The next stop then was the house where the writer Jindrich Simon Boar was born. After a short stopover at the beautiful viewpoint with the Cerchov-memorial the trip went on to the Comenius dinner.

The European guests could enjoy typical meals and see a stunning presentation of kids and youth in traditional costumes. Performing folkloric dances and playing on traditional instruments like the Czech bagpipe, they created a really nice atmosphere on this wonderful evening.

In the morning of the last day the teachers visited the primary school. The young hosts welcomed them with lots of self-made crafts and musical performances. Meanwhile the German and Luxembourgian students started to say good-bye to their new friends, after the guest from Italy and Greece had already left in the early morning. Lots of tears went along with the final parting. With numerous precious memories on board the bus then finally started heading towards home.

All partners are already looking forward to meeting again in Luxembourg in October. Thank you again to the Czech partners who organised a wonderful meeting.

Fourth meeting

The fourth project meeting with all partners took place in Erpeldange, Luxembourg from 15th till 19th of October 2013.

On the occasion of the fourth meeting in the running project teachers and students met in Erpeldange, Luxemburg from the 15th till 18th of October. The staff of “Schoulzentrum Erpeldange” welcomed their guests from all over Europe with a delicious dinner.

On the next morning the Comenius-partners started working straight away. At first the teachers visited the newly built rooms of the primary school and the kindergarten, while the exchange students attended the lessons together with their hosts. It was a pleasure for the youngest kids in the school-centre to welcome the guests in their house. They made plum-jam, muffins, sang, danced and crafted, so that the teachers finally had problems in carrying all their presents.

Later that morning the teachers were welcomed by the municipal administration in the castle of Erpeldange. Major André Bauler highlighted the importance of the project as it means a enrichment for all the partners, opening the doors towards Europe and allowing a gasp into different cultures and pedagogical traditions. School-inspector Gérard Roettgers described the huge variety of cultures in Luxembourg and the resulting challenges in school. Everyone agreed on how important the Comenius-work is to get to know other cultures and to develop tolerance amongst students. “Our students are the future of Europe”, contributed Günter Peifer, the leader of the project. He thanked the municipal administration and the school-inspector for their great support. Especially the attendance of the former major Francis Dahm made him really happy because Mr. Dahm is also a great supporter of the Comenius-project and also attended several meetings in Europe.

After having lunch the school’s canteen, the teachers started to work in the workshop, focusing on traditional clothing, dancing and singing. Furthermore tasks have been set and the format of the cultural atlas has been agreed on.

Afterwards everyone went to the hall, where the students presented their School Charta in a very illustrative way. In the evening everyone could enjoy typical Luxembourgian specialties in a restaurant nearby.

On the next morning the teachers continued working in the workshop. Then the Luxembourgian students proofed their abilities. On the schoolyard they carved “Traulichte” out of turnips, a tradition similar to the pumpkins on Halloween. A further class offered “Kochkäse” (special kind of spread cheese) on baguette and Luxembourgian mustard. Others recited poems in French and showed how you could use the internet in lessons in a sensible way.

While the students spent some time in their host families, the teachers went to Vianden to visit the pumped-storage-power-plant. The proportions of the reservoir and the immense power of the pumps impressed everyone.

In the evening a great show awaited all the teachers and students. The Luxembourgian hosts invited everyone to an international evening in the gymnasium. All partners contributed an act to the program: Turkish Hennanight, Czech dances and songs, precious Greek and Romanian traditional clothing or German majorette – the performances were as multifaceted as the Comenius partners are.

The Luxembourgian students also presented a huge variety of acts that made everyone in the audience clap. During the break the parents of the school offered a huge international buffet and several refreshments. The final performance has been a dancing show by a Portuguese folk-dance-group- There is a large number of immigrants from Portugal in Luxemburg. Everyone has been impressed by this great and well organized evening.

On the last day of the meeting teachers and students went to Luxembourg’s capital. Guided tours in several languages had been organized and the guides could tell lots of interesting details, for example on the church “Notre Dame” or the casemates.

While the students went back to Erpeldange to their host-families, the teachers went to Schengen in the border triangle of Luxembourg, France and Germany, which is an important place for Europe. In the “Maison de l’Europe” you could witness the history of Europe and of the Schengen Agreement. On the sculpture “E Schlass fir Schengen” now is hanging an engraved padlock, reminding of the visit of the Comenius-partners. Closely related to the Schengen idea of an open Europe, the keys have traditionally been thrown into the river Mosel.

The day as well as the project meeting had a wonderful end in the vineyards of Schengen. After winegrower Henri Ruppert showed his guest round he offered some of his wines for a tasting. After that he invited the teachers to have dinner in his imposing estate. From the terrace you have a great view on Germany, France and Luxembourg at the same time. Impressed by this scenery the teachers bided farewell to each other and to Luxembourg. But not for a long time….the next meeting in Greece will already take place in December.

Thank you to our friends in Luxembourg for organizing such a wonderful meeting! Villmools merci!

Fifth Meeting

The fifth project meeting with all partners took place in Aiani, Greece from 9th till 13th of December 2013.

In the fifth meeting of the Comenius project the host for all partners has been Greece. The school of Aiani welcomed students and teachers of all 6 partners.

All guests were welcomed warmly by students, parents and teachers in the 2000 inhabitant’s village. While the students went to their host families the teachers could enjoy a typical Greek dinner and were welcomed as well by the staff of the school and several local politicians.

The next morning the students took part in lessons whereas the teachers made their way to the city of Kozani. First the group went to the town hall where a delegation of councilors welcomed the guests from all over Europe. After that the director of education of the region of western Macedonia, Vailiki Vontsa, awaited the group. To the big surprise of the teachers, Vontsa welcomed them in German, as she studied exactly in the same part of Germany the partner school of Weiskirchen is located in. She found warm words and appreciated the work of all Comenius partners.

Back to Aiani the teachers could attend several interesting lessons before the students presented the play “Irini” by Aristophanes, concentrating on the motive of peace.

In the afternoon everyone could explore Aiani and then students, teachers and parents decorated a Christmas tree right in the middle of the village. While the students spent the rest of the evening with their host families the teachers took part in an typical Greek barbeque with traditional music.

The next day was filled by a trip to the second largest city of Greece, Thessaloniki. Lots of sights waited to be seen: Basilica Hagion Demetrios, The Byzantine city wall, the triumphal arch of Galerius, the harbor and many more. The most impressive on e of course has been the White Tower, being the landmark of the city. The exhibition inside of the tower gave a great impression of the history of the city. Climbing up all the stairs to the top then has been rewarded with a wonderful view all over the city and the sea.

The last began in the local museum of Aiani. The students of the school lead their guests through the exhibition with lots of interesting findings of the region. The students also showed the way of making bread in ancient times and the traditional clothing worn in the region.

For lunch staff and parents of the school of Aiani prepared a great buffet offering the best the Greek kitchen offers. Additionally the students had prepared several singing and dancing acts. Of course all the guests could proof their dancing skills in a round of Sirtaki. All participants enjoyed themselves a lot listening to the traditional music and eating the delicious food.

After fun some work awaited the teachers. During the Comenius workshop the meeting in Italy in February had to be organized and tasks have been shared.

At the Comenius dinner in the evening everyone again could enjoy the huge variety of Greek food.

Saying god bye the next morning caused lots of tears, especially with the students. They all met lots of new friends in a short time and thus the main aim of such a meeting again has been reached: meeting each other without prejudices, being open and tolerant to other cultures and thus gaining enrichment for your own personality.
